Parfait and Michelle Karekezi, Founders Send Me International
Parfait Karekezi was born in Rwanda in 1966 and raised in the town of Butare. As a young man, his good grades allowed him to qualify for one of his country's few openings for a university education. Disillusionment with inequities in the education system led him to come to the United States, where he graduated from Indiana University in 1992 with a degree in Applied Mathematics. Two years later, Parfait would learn the terrible news of the genocide in Rwanda and the deaths of most of his family and friends. The genocide, which began in April 1994, stemmed from ethnic tribal hostilities between the majority Hutus, who controlled the government at that time, and the minority Tutsis, the tribe of Parfait's family.
Devastated, Parfait took a job as a long-distance truck driver. The isolation of this work helped him cope with the feelings of anger, helplessness and hopelessness in the face of his family's tragedy. In 1996, Parfait accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a truck stop chapel in Connecticut.
A native of Pennsylvania, Michelle was saved as a college student in 1991. A year after graduating in 1994 with a degree in Dietetics and a well paying job as a Dietitian she found herself hungering for more of God. Following the leading of the Holy Spirit she moved to Texas to attend Jerry Savelle School of World Evangelism to be trained as a minister of the gospel. During that time she had the privilege to work at Kenneth Copeland Ministries. After graduation she returned to Pennsylvania and in the fall took a job as a nutritionist. At the end of April in 1998 she was released from that job for sharing her Christian faith. Her pastor advised her to go and speak to a lady evangelist at a truck stop chapel near her house. She obeyed and found herself working as the Chaplain’s assistant. It was there she would meet Parfait, sitting across from her during a prayer hour. The two shared a deepening, long-distance friendship as Parfait continued working as a truck driver and Michelle spent a year in Israel as a missionary.
Following their marriage in September 2000, Parfait and Michelle relocated to Tulsa and affiliated with Victory Christian Center. At Victory, they attended Victory Bible Institute and were active in intercessory prayer ministry and Evangelism Explosion. The training they received has been integral to the Karekezi's ministry work in Rwanda which began in 2008. Their mission base remains Tulsa, where Send Me International is a member of Victory Fellowship of Ministries; Victory Christian Center is their home church.
